IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION

Does Novo Nordisk PAP Cover Wegovy?

Wegovy Is Not Currently Covered by Novo Nordisk PAP

Novo Nordisk's Patient Assistance Program (PAP), which provides free medications to low-income patients, does not currently include Wegovy for weight loss on its medication list.[1] This may change in the future, but Wegovy is not on the PAP's current product list.

If you've seen information online suggesting Wegovy is covered by Novo Nordisk PAP, that information is inaccurate. We've verified this directly with current program documentation.

What Is the Novo Nordisk Patient Assistance Program?

The Novo Nordisk PAP is a charitable program that provides free medications to qualifying patients who:

  • Have Medicare or no insurance (not commercial insurance, Medicaid, Extra Help or VA benefits)[2]
  • Meet the 2026 income limit: if uninsured, at or below 200% of the federal poverty level for Ozempic or 400% of the federal poverty level for other listed medicines[2]
  • Are U.S. citizens or legal residents
  • Have a valid prescription (plus a Medicaid or Extra Help denial letter if you may qualify for those programs)

While the PAP covers some Novo Nordisk medications (including Ozempic for diabetes for uninsured patients), Wegovy for weight loss is not currently on the list.[1]

Ozempic vs Wegovy: Same Drug, Different Coverage

Ozempic (same active ingredient as Wegovy—semaglutide, a GLP-1 medication) IS covered by the PAP, but only for Type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. In 2026, Medicare beneficiaries with drug coverage can no longer get Ozempic through the PAP; uninsured patients still can, with income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.[2]

Will Novo Nordisk PAP Add Wegovy in the Future?

It's possible but not confirmed. We recommend:

In the meantime, there ARE real options to make Wegovy more affordable—see below.

NOT A PAP, BUT A GREAT ALTERNATIVE

NovoCare Self-Pay Option

A Self-Pay Option for Uninsured Patients

NovoCare isn't a patient assistance program—it's Novo Nordisk's direct-to-consumer pharmacy offering Wegovy at significantly reduced cash prices:

  • Introductory offer (0.25mg, 0.5mg): $199/month for the first two fills (0.25 mg and 0.5 mg), through December 31, 2026[3]
  • Regular self-pay (all doses): $349/month ($399 for Wegovy HD 7.2 mg)[3]

No income requirements. No insurance needed. If you have government insurance, ask NovoCare whether you can use self-pay pricing.[3]

This represents significant savings compared to the $1,349/month list price—and unlike traditional patient assistance, there's no income test: you need a valid prescription.[4]

How to Access NovoCare Pricing

  1. Get a prescription from your healthcare provider
  2. Visit NovoCare's Wegovy page or call 1-888-809-3942
  3. Register for the self-pay program
  4. Fill at a participating pharmacy at the reduced price

FOR COMMERCIALLY INSURED PATIENTS

Wegovy Savings Card

If you have commercial (private) insurance that covers Wegovy, the manufacturer savings card can reduce your cost to as little as $25/month.[5]

Savings Card Quick Facts[5]

  • Cost: As low as $25/month (all doses)
  • Max savings: $100/1-month, $200/2-month, $300/3-month supply
  • Eligibility: Commercially insured patients with Wegovy coverage
  • How to get: Register at wegovy.com or call NovoCare

Who Qualifies for the Savings Card?

  • Patients with commercial insurance that covers Wegovy
  • Must have a valid prescription for an FDA-approved use
  • U.S. residents 18 years or older

Who Does NOT Qualify[5]

  • Medicare (including Part D)
  • Medicaid
  • TRICARE, VA, or other government insurance
  • Patients whose insurance doesn't cover Wegovy (use NovoCare self-pay instead)

NEW OPTION - DECEMBER 2025

Oral Wegovy (Pill Form)

Wegovy Now Available as a Pill

On December 22, 2025, the FDA approved oral semaglutide (Wegovy pill) for chronic weight management. This offers a lower-cost alternative to injectable Wegovy:

  • Starter dose (1.5mg): $149/month via NovoCare[13]
  • Titration dose (4mg): $199/month via NovoCare[13]
  • Maintenance doses (9mg, 25mg): $299/month via NovoCare[13]

No injection required—take once daily by mouth.[6]

Why Consider Oral Wegovy?

  • Lower cost: $149–$299/month vs $349/month injectable
  • No needles: Daily pill instead of weekly injection
  • Same active ingredient: Semaglutide (identical to injectable Wegovy)
  • Similar efficacy: In the OASIS 4 trial, the 25 mg pill led to 16.6% average weight loss when taken as directed (13.6% counting everyone who started); Novo Nordisk says that's similar to injectable Wegovy 2.4 mg[6][7]

ADDITIONAL WAYS TO REDUCE COSTS

Other Affordability Options

Appeal Your Insurance Denial

If your insurance denied Wegovy coverage, don't give up. Over 65% of prior authorization appeals succeed.[8] An appeal can get your insurance to cover Wegovy, potentially reducing your cost to just a copay.

PAN Foundation Obesity Fund

The Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation offers income-based copay assistance for obesity treatments, including FDA-approved GLP-1 medications like Wegovy, for people whose insurance covers the medication.[9]

  • Grant amount: Up to $1,000/year for copays[9]
  • Eligibility: Household income at or below 300% of federal poverty level[9]
  • Requirement: Must have insurance that covers the medication
  • Current status: The fund has closed quickly after opening because of demand; check whether it is open now[9]
  • Check status at panfoundation.org/disease-funds/obesity

Independent Patient Assistance Foundations

Some nonprofit foundations provide financial assistance for medications independent of manufacturers:

Note: Availability for GLP-1 (a class of weight loss medications) varies. Check each program for current coverage.

Check State Medicaid Expansion

Some state Medicaid programs cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss. Coverage varies significantly by state and is subject to change.

Consider the CV Indication Pathway

If you are an adult with established cardiovascular disease and either obesity or overweight, Wegovy's FDA-approved CV indication (reducing heart attacks and strokes) may be covered even when weight loss isn't, subject to your plan's criteria. Ask your doctor about this pathway.[10]

WHAT'S CHANGING

Patient Assistance Outlook for 2026

Major Affordability Changes in 2026

While Novo Nordisk PAP still doesn't cover Wegovy, 2026 brought significant new options for patients who can't afford the medication—including TrumpRx and the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.

Confirmed for 2026

TrumpRx Direct-Purchase Program

TrumpRx launched on February 5, 2026 at trumprx.gov. TrumpRx lists the manufacturers’ own self-pay prices (not a separate, cheaper price): for the Wegovy injection that is NovoCare’s self-pay price of $349/month ($399 for Wegovy HD 7.2 mg) (list price $1,349/month), with no income requirements.[11]

Medicare GLP-1 Bridge (Live Since July 1, 2026)

Medicare and weight-loss GLP-1s: the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge

Through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge (July 1, 2026 – December 31, 2027), a temporary CMS demonstration that runs outside the Part D benefit, people with eligible Part D coverage can get Wegovy, Foundayo or the Zepbound KwikPen for weight loss for $50 a month, if they meet CMS’s eligibility criteria and their prescriber gets prior authorization.

  • Who qualifies: Age 18+ and BMI ≥35; or BMI ≥30 with HFpEF, uncontrolled high blood pressure or CKD stage 3a+; or BMI ≥27 with prediabetes, a prior heart attack or stroke, or symptomatic PAD.
  • Who doesn’t: Not eligible if you have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea, or noncirrhotic MASH with moderate-to-advanced liver fibrosis (F2–F3), or if your Part D plan paid for a GLP-1 for you at any time in 2026.
  • Cost: $50 per monthly fill. Does not count toward the Part D deductible or out-of-pocket cap. Extra Help (LIS) does not lower it. Not eligible for the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. Coupons and discount programs can’t be applied.
  • No opt-in needed: Part D plans and pharmacies don’t opt in, and you don’t enroll separately; your prescriber must get prior authorization.
  • If it’s denied: No appeals process for a Bridge prior-authorization denial: your prescriber can resubmit with more information (Part D appeal rights for Part D coverage decisions still apply).

Novo Nordisk PAP May Add Wegovy

Novo Nordisk has not announced plans to add Wegovy to its PAP—check novocare.com periodically for updates.

Medicaid Coverage Keeps Changing

States add and drop coverage: 13 states (as of January 2026) covered GLP-1s for obesity in Medicaid, and Medi-Cal stopped covering GLP-1s for weight loss on January 1, 2026. The BALANCE model’s Medicaid track: Voluntary for states, which can join between May 2026 and January 1, 2027; no participating state has been confirmed.[12]

What Should You Do Now?

  • Comparing prices? TrumpRx lists the same Wegovy self-pay prices as NovoCare
  • On Medicare? The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is live: $50 per monthly fill for Wegovy if you qualify—ask your doctor
  • On Medicaid? Coverage varies by state—check with your state plan
  • Want the lowest self-pay starting price? The Wegovy pill starts at $149/month (1.5 mg); the full range is $149–$299/month by dose
  • Need help now? NovoCare ($199–$349/mo injectable) is an option you can use now

WEGOVY AFFORDABILITY FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Not through Novo Nordisk PAP. While Novo Nordisk's Patient Assistance Program provides free medications to qualifying low-income patients, Wegovy is not currently on the covered medication list. However, uninsured patients can use NovoCare to get Wegovy at $199–$349/month (injectable) or $149–$299/month (oral pill), and commercially insured patients may qualify for the Wegovy Savings Card (as little as $25/month).

Currently, there is no program offering free Wegovy. The lowest-cost options are: (1) Wegovy Savings Card at as little as $25/month if you have commercial insurance that covers it, (2) Oral Wegovy from $149/month via NovoCare (the lowest Wegovy self-pay starting price), or (3) PAN Foundation copay grants for obesity treatment, if your insurance covers Wegovy and the fund is open. Some independent nonprofit foundations may offer limited assistance—check panfoundation.org and NeedyMeds.org for current programs.

Novo Nordisk has not publicly stated why Wegovy is excluded from their PAP. It may be due to the high demand and cost of GLP-1 (a class of weight loss medications). The PAP does cover Ozempic (same active ingredient, semaglutide) for Type 2 diabetes, but not Wegovy for weight loss—and in 2026 Medicare beneficiaries with drug coverage can no longer get Ozempic through the PAP. This could change in the future—check the official NovoCare PAP page for updates.

Among NovoCare's self-pay prices, the Wegovy pill has the lowest starting price: $149/month (1.5mg), $199/month (4mg) or $299/month for maintenance doses (9mg, 25mg). For injectable Wegovy, NovoCare offers $199/month for the first two fills (0.25 mg and 0.5 mg), through December 31, 2026, then $349/month ($399 for Wegovy HD 7.2 mg). TrumpRx lists the manufacturers’ own self-pay prices (not a separate, cheaper price), so TrumpRx shows the same Wegovy prices.

Only if you have commercial insurance that covers Wegovy. The Wegovy Savings Card reduces your copay to as low as $25/month (all doses), but it requires: (1) commercial/private insurance, (2) your plan must cover Wegovy, and (3) you cannot have Medicare, Medicaid, or other government insurance. If you're uninsured, another option is the Wegovy pill (self-pay) from $149/month.

Yes. You can use NovoCare ($199–$349/month for injectable, $149–$299/month for oral) to start treatment while their prior authorization (pre-approval from your insurer) or appeal is processing. If your insurance later approves coverage, you can switch to using insurance + the savings card (as little as $25/month). This ensures you don't delay treatment while navigating the insurance process.

There are several ways to make Wegovy more affordable: (1) With commercial insurance: Use the Wegovy Savings Card to pay as low as $25/month. (2) Without insurance: Use oral Wegovy via NovoCare at $149–$299/month (lowest starting price) or injectable at $199–$349/month. (3) TrumpRx: lists the same NovoCare self-pay prices, with no insurance required. (4) If denied by insurance: Appeal the denial—over 65% of appeals succeed. (5) Check nonprofits: PAN Foundation and NeedyMeds may offer additional assistance.
